Helicopter landing at The Alfred's Trauma Centre

Air ambulance helicopter approaching The Alfred Hospital

When The Alfred Emergency & Trauma Centre approached me to photograph their helicopter patient transfer process, I knew we were in for an adrenaline-pumping experience. This wasn't just another photoshoot – it was a chance to document life-saving moments in action.

The challenge was twofold: be ready at a moment's notice and capture the entire process without compromising patient privacy. My solution? Park myself just 2km away with a bicycle and a streamlined camera kit, ready to pedal to the scene in minutes.

Photoshoot Walkthrough: The call came, and I was off! Arriving at the helipad in just 9 minutes, I quickly introduced myself to the medical team. As the helicopter touched down, I focused on capturing the coordinated efforts of the paramedics and hospital staff. Following the patient's journey from the helipad to the trauma unit, I documented the intense, focused work of the medical team, always mindful to keep the patient's identity protected.

Client Usage and Feedback: The Alfred has used these images extensively in their publications and website. One of my favourites now graces the banner of The Alfred Foundation's webpage – a powerful testament to the impact of authentic healthcare imagery.

This project shows why I love healthcare photography. It's about balancing technical skill with empathy, capturing critical moments while respecting the sensitivities of medical environments. It's challenging, but extremely rewarding!
