Capturing Australia's First Mobile ICU CT Scanner in Action

Impact Report Publication 2022

The Alfred Foundation, supporting one of Victoria's largest hospitals, invited MMP Studio to document the groundbreaking installation and use of Australia's first mobile CT scanner in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

ICU staff no longer have to wheel patients to the CT scanner

The client needed high-quality images showcasing the new mobile CT scanner in real-time use with actual patients. This required working around busy medical staff in a sensitive ICU environment without disrupting critical care procedures.

The new scanner can be wheeled in to the patient in ICU

MMP studio's approach focused on minimal disruption and maximum authenticity. Photographer Michelle McFarlane used her experience in healthcare settings to blend into the background, capturing genuine moments of the scanner in use while respecting patient privacy and staff workflow.

Preparing the patient

Photoshoot Process:

  1. Pre-shoot briefing with ICU staff to understand protocols and sensitive areas.

  2. Use of compact, silent camera equipment to minimise disturbance.

  3. Strategic positioning to capture key moments without interfering with medical procedures.

  4. Rapid adjustments to lighting and composition as the scanner moved around the ICU.

  5. Continuous communication with staff to ensure no disruption to patient care.

The patient no longer needs to be moved from ICU

The images illustrated the revolutionary impact of the mobile CT scanner, showcasing:

  • The scanner's mobility and ease of use at patients' bedsides

  • Collaboration between radiology and ICU teams

  • The scanner's integration into the ICU environment
