Photographing Innovation at the Victorian Adult Burns Service
Step into the world of cutting-edge burns treatment as Michelle McFarlane, founder of MMP Studio, takes you behind the scenes of her recent photoshoot at the Victorian Adult Burns Service at The Alfred Hospital.
A bandaged burns patient in the ward
The Burns Service needed to visually communicate their expertise and innovative treatments, including the groundbreaking NovoSorb bioengineered skin. Our challenge was to capture these elements while navigating the sensitive environment of a working hospital.

Photoshoot Process: Our 4-hour shoot was a whirlwind of activity. We started in the burns ward, capturing genuine interactions between staff and patients. A highlight was photographing a nurse meticulously preparing specialised bandages, showcasing the attention to detail in patient care.
Dr. Dane Holden, Deputy Director of the Burns Service with “artificial skin”
In the operating theatre, donning full scrubs, photographer Michelle McFarlane had the privilege of photographing Dr. Dane Holden, Deputy Director of the Burns Service, demonstrating the NovoSorb bioengineered skin. This revolutionary product is changing the game in burns treatment, and we were there to document it.
One of the most touching moments came when photographing a patient who, despite his circumstances, maintained a great sense of humor. It's these human elements that truly bring healthcare photography to life.
Outcomes: The resulting images now grace the Victorian Adult Burns Service and The Alfred Hospital websites, effectively showcasing their world-class care. As the Senior Digital Advisor at The Alfred noted, "These are amazing – as always."
